What to Pack for a Day on the Water in the Virgin Islands

Heading out on a boat day in the USVI? Here’s everything you need to pack — from sun protection to simple extras that make your day more comfortable.

Be Ready for Sun, Salt & the Best Day of Your Vacation

Getting ready for a day on the water in the Virgin Islands? Whether you’re joining us on a private charter or heading out on another tour, having the right gear makes all the difference. The sun’s strong, the water’s salty, and you’re probably going to be in and out of the boat all day.

This isn’t a fancy packing list — just the essentials to keep you comfortable, sun-safe, and ready to enjoy your time on the water. Here’s what we recommend bringing along.

🌞 Sun Protection Must-Haves

The Caribbean sun is no joke. Even on cloudy days, you’ll feel it — and you’ll definitely feel it later if you forget sun protection. Here’s what we always recommend bringing:

  • Reef-safe sunscreen – Lotion-style is best (sprays can damage reefs and make boat decks slippery)
  • Hat – A wide-brim hat or ball cap helps keep your face shaded
  • Polarized sunglasses – They cut glare and help you actually see into the water
  • Sun shirt or rash guard – Especially helpful if you’re snorkeling or have fair skin

We also recommend applying sunscreen before you get on the boat so it has time to soak in (and doesn’t wash right off). A second coat after snorkeling doesn’t hurt either.

👙 What to Wear on the Boat

You don’t need much to enjoy a day on the water, but wearing the right things can make it a lot more comfortable. Think simple, lightweight, and easy to dry.

  • Swimsuit – You’ll probably be in and out of the water more than once
  • Cover-up or T-shirt – Nice to throw on when you’re not swimming
  • Towel – One per person is plenty (we recommend quick-dry if you have one)
  • Barefoot or sandals – Most boats go barefoot once you’re onboard, so wear something easy to slip off

If it’s breezy or you’re staying out late, a light long-sleeve or hoodie can come in handy too — especially after a swim.

💧 Stuff to Keep Dry

You’re going to get wet — that’s part of the fun — but there are a few things you’ll want to keep dry throughout the day. These simple items help protect your stuff from splashes and saltwater.

  • Dry bag – Great for holding towels, extra clothes, and anything you don’t want wet
  • Waterproof phone pouch – So you can take pics without risking your phone
  • Ziploc bag or small waterproof case – Handy for cash, cards, or car keys

Even on calm days, boats can be splashy, so it’s always better to be prepared. Bonus: A dry bag also helps keep your sandy stuff contained after the beach.

🥤 Snacks, Drinks & What’s Onboard

YIf you’re joining us on a Bonus Time Charters trip, you’re all set with the basics — we’ve got coolers, ice, and bottled water ready to go. You’re more than welcome to bring your own drinks and snacks, just no glass bottles, please.

We also often stop at fun local spots like Lime Out, Pizza Pi, or the Soggy Dollar Bar, depending on your trip. Whether it’s tacos, floating pizza, or a Painkiller on the beach, there’s always a good chance you’ll get to grab a bite or a drink on the water.

If you’re heading out with another company, check with them ahead of time — not all charters include coolers or water, and policies can vary.

🐠 If You Plan to Snorkel or Swim

Most trips in the Virgin Islands include at least one stop to swim or snorkel — and sometimes more. Whether you’re bringing your own gear or using ours, here’s what to keep in mind:

  • Snorkel gear – We provide high-quality masks, snorkels, and fins, but you’re welcome to bring your own if you prefer
  • Rash guard or sun shirt – Helps protect your skin while you float and explore from the sun or any sea life
  • Towel – A must for drying off between swims

We’ll take you to calm, easy spots where snorkeling is simple and fun — no need to be a pro.

🎒 Optional but Nice to Have

You don’t need any of this, but these little extras can make your boat day even better.

  • GoPro or waterproof camera – Great for snapping underwater shots
  • Book or playlist – Some quiet time on the bow is never a bad idea
  • Reusable water bottle – If you like having your own (we’ve got water onboard too)

If you’re not sure whether to pack it — bring it. It’s always easier to leave it in the dry bag than wish you had it later.

🇻🇬 If You’re Heading to the British Virgin Islands

If your trip includes stops like Jost Van Dyke, The Baths, or Willy T, you’re heading into the British Virgin Islands (BVI) — which means you’ll need a couple of extra things to be prepared.

  • Passport required – Everyone in your group, including kids, must bring a valid passport
  • Customs fees – These vary by season and are collected in cash at check-in (we’ll give you the exact amount ahead of time)
  • U.S. dollar cash – Some bars and restaurants in the BVIs are cash-only, so it’s smart to bring a little with you
  • Dry bag or pouch – Keep your passport and cash dry while you’re swimming or beach-hopping

We’ll walk you through everything before the trip, so you’ll know exactly what to expect. Just don’t forget those passports — we can’t leave without them!

🚫 What Not to Bring

A boat day is all about keeping things simple. Here are a few things better left behind:

  • Spray sunscreen – It’s slippery on the deck, damages the boat, and harmful to marine life
  • Glass bottles – For safety, please stick to cans or plastic
  • Oversized beach bags – Space is limited on the boat, so go light
  • Valuables – Leave jewelry or anything you don’t want wet or lost

If you’re not sure about something, just ask! We’re happy to help you pack smart.
