Best Beaches of St. John, USVI
Here are 13 of the best beaches on St. John, perfect for snorkeling, swimming, and soaking up the Caribbean sun:
1. Maho Bay
Calm, clear, and famous for sea turtles, Maho Bay is one of the most beloved beaches on St. John. It’s perfect for families, beginner snorkelers, or anyone who wants to float and spot marine life in waist-deep water. You might also see rays, tarpon, and starfish cruising the seagrass beds.
2. Trunk Bay
Known for its striking blue water and soft white sand, Trunk Bay is one of the most photographed beaches in the Caribbean. It features an underwater snorkeling trail just offshore, where you can swim over coral and read plaques identifying marine life. Popular, but always worth the visit.
3. Cinnamon Bay
One of the longest beaches on the island, Cinnamon Bay offers wide open space, great snorkeling, and beautiful views of the surrounding cays. It’s less crowded than Trunk, with excellent access to the reef along the eastern shoreline.
4. Scott Beach
A hidden gem only accessible by boat, Scott Beach is a longtime favorite of our charter guests. With the Caneel Bay Resort still in ruins, the beach remains quiet, calm, and often completely empty—making it feel like your own private escape. It’s also one of the best places on the island to snorkel with sea turtles.
5. Honeymoon Beach
Tucked between Caneel Bay and Cruz Bay, Honeymoon Beach is peaceful and scenic with soft sand and gentle waves. It’s accessible by hiking trail or boat and offers some light food and drink options from seasonal vendors.
6. Salt Pond Bay
On the island’s south shore, Salt Pond Bay offers calm, clear water and one of the best chances to snorkel with sea turtles away from the crowds. A short hike leads you to this peaceful bay, but arriving by boat gives you front-row access without the walk.
7. Little Lameshur Bay
A remote and quiet beach on the far south shore, Little Lameshur is perfect for guests looking for a more secluded experience. The snorkeling is excellent, especially around the rocky edges of the bay, and it’s often completely uncrowded.
8. Waterlemon Cay
This drift snorkel spot near Leinster Bay is a fan favorite. Swim out to Waterlemon Cay and let the current guide you around vibrant coral reefs. Keep your eyes peeled for spotted eagle rays, elkhorn coral, and schools of reef fish.
9. Caneel Bay
Once home to a luxury resort, Caneel Bay now offers a peaceful setting with great views and several small beaches to explore. It’s best accessed by boat, and while there are no services currently operating onshore, the natural beauty is the draw here.
10. Hansen Bay Beach
Located near Coral Bay, Hansen Bay is a calm and beautiful spot with soft sand, warm water, and easy snorkeling. This area is also home to Pelican Rock, a lesser-known snorkel site nearby teeming with marine life.
11. Francis Bay
Neighboring Maho, Francis Bay is quieter, with fewer crowds and just as much beauty. The beach is long, with great snorkeling along the right side of the bay and typically calm water. Great for floating and relaxing.
12. Great Lameshur Bay
Just down from Little Lameshur, this bay is a bit more rugged, with larger rocks and deeper snorkeling. It’s a great spot for more adventurous swimmers and a peaceful stop on a south shore route.
13. Jumbie Beach
Small, quiet, and close to Trunk Bay, Jumbie Beach is a favorite for its peaceful vibe and easy snorkeling near the rocky point.
